That was when I discovered a map mixed in with them. An icy chill ran down my back when I realized it was of Itoigawa, Niigata. The feeling got worse when I saw the location of Himekawa Hospital circled in red. That was where I dropped off Ume and Shishi.

My hand shook as I read the note in the margin. “You’re next.”

For a moment, it looked back, and I glimpsed red ember-like eyes. Then everything became indistinct, like looking through dense smoke. I gasped for air, and what I sucked in clogged my throat and lungs. My hands went involuntarily to my throat, clawing impotently. Staggering back, I slammed into the light, which fell and shattered.

“This is it, I thought,” as I collapsed. My vision dimmed while spots floated in front of my eyes. My lungs felt like they would burst.

Then it struck me: she had tawny fox eyes that almost seemed to glow. My uncle had told me, “You can tell a kitsune from a real human by how their eyes slant.” He also warned me to avoid kitsune. “They like to play mean tricks,” he had said. So I moved toward the monk, who was beckoning me to approach.

She smelled of freshly applied cosmetics. The scent of violets, sandalwood, and cosmetics would never be the same; the perfume of love and my girlfriend.
